Tip#1: Oil Pressure
Maintaining proper oil pressure is important because oil pressure affects the supply of oil throughout the engine. When your oil pressure readings are outside acceptable parameters, here is a list of some common factors that can affect oil pressure readings.
  • Faulty oil pressure sensor/circuitry, or high pressure relief valve
  • Using the wrong oil; if too heavy, it can increase pressure
  • Using the wrong oil; if too light, it can decrease pressure
  • Coolant contamination can increase pressure
  • Fuel in the oil can decrease pressure
  • High levels of soot and sludge can increase pressure
  • Low or high oil fill levels
  • Plugged oil filter or oil cooler
  • Malfunctioning oil pump, suction or transfer tube
  • Excessive oil temperature
  • Leaking gasket or O-rings
  • Damaged or improperly installed piston cooling nozzles

Whenever a vehicle displays low oil pressure, thoroughly investigate the causes until you determine the true culprit. Low oil pressure may lead to oil starvation, which could result in damage to components.
